Café Inglês

Halfway up Silves’ hill, where the cobbled streets finally deliver you to the castle gate, Café Inglês occupies an old mansion with a terrace set directly beneath the red sandstone walls. Sit outside and the fortification fills your view: courses of rust-coloured stone stacked overhead, cut from the same rock as the hill it crowns, close enough to read the texture in every block.

It’s the rare café where the view is upward. The terrace works as the decompression stop after the ramparts or the pause before them: coffee and shade with the walls of the Moorish capital as a backdrop, the cathedral a few steps away, the town dropping toward the Arade below. The house itself holds up its end of the frame.

When to go: morning, paired with the castle visit. The east light warms the sandstone to amber, the terrace is quiet before the day’s tour groups climb the hill, and inland Silves is at its best before the heat builds: summer middays up here are genuinely hot.
