Armação de Pêra’s beach does scale rather than drama: a long, flat, uninterrupted run of golden sand — among the longest on the central coast — fronting the whole town and then continuing east past the Salgados lagoon toward Galé. The name remembers the tuna-net rigs, the armações, that the settlement grew around, and the fishing quarter is still the beach’s best corner: hulls and nets drawn up on the sand, a working fleet among the holiday crowd.

Honesty first: the town behind the sand is apartment-block Portugal, not whitewashed-postcard Portugal. Face the sea and it stops mattering — the beach is wide enough that even August finds room, and the further east you walk the emptier and wilder it gets, dunes replacing buildings within twenty minutes.

When to go: mornings for the fishing-quarter light and the boats; late afternoon for long walks east as the crowds drain. The flat, open sand takes wind when it blows, with nothing to hide behind.

Who it’s for: families who want space and full services without cove-scrambling; walkers — the run toward Salgados is one of the coast’s better beach walks; photographers drawn to working boats rather than rock arches.
