Praia de São Rafael is where the carved-limestone coast begins if you approach from Albufeira. A compact cove of pale sand, bracketed at both ends by golden stacks and low arches, with the clear green-blue water the central Algarve trades on. It sits on the doorstep of one of Portugal’s busiest resort towns and looks like it belongs on a far quieter coast.

The rock is the picture. Weathered pillars stand just off the sand, and at the lower half of the tide the beach extends around their bases, opening angles that don’t exist at high water — you can frame the stacks from the sea side and use the wet sand as a mirror. The cliff path above the cove adds the wider context: sculpted coastline running off toward Galé.

When to go: early, or out of season. This is a small beach with a big reputation, and July and August afternoons bury it in umbrellas. Spring and autumn mornings give you the cove nearly clean, softer light, and enough tide range to work the rocks. Check the tide before you plan the shot — the interesting sand only exists when the water is out.

Who it’s for: photographers who want classic central-Algarve rock forms without committing to the Lagoa cliff-path circuit; swimmers and snorkellers on calm days, when the water around the stacks is clear and shallow; families outside peak season. In August, come for the swim and lower your expectations for the tripod.
