For two or three weeks in late winter, the Barrocal hills around São Bartolomeu de Messines put on the Algarve’s quietest show: the almond trees bloom, and the rolling country of olives, carobs and dry-stone walls picks up drifts of white and pale pink. It’s blossom season, southern style — older, sparser and wilder than the famous orchard displays elsewhere in Europe, and almost entirely unphotographed.

This is a scene rather than a site. There’s no signposted blossom route and no single viewpoint; the almonds are scattered through smallholdings and field edges along the rural lanes around the village. The best frames put a blossoming tree against the bare hills or a whitewashed farm building, with the long ridges of the Barrocal rolling behind.

When to go: February, give or take — the bloom tracks the winter and doesn’t wait for anyone. Morning and late afternoon light suits the soft colours; midday flattens them.

Treat it as a slow drive with frequent stops. The lanes are narrow and the land is private and worked, so shoot from the roadside and leave gates and walls alone. The village itself makes a fair coffee stop.

Who it’s for: patient landscape photographers, blossom chasers, and anyone wintering in the Algarve looking for a reason to drive inland. If you need a pin to stand on, this isn’t it — the reward is in the wandering.
