The Alentejo-Algarve Border Walk: From Zambujeira do Mar to Cape Sardão
Where the Alentejo cliff coastline meets the Atlantic, there is a stretch of trail that most tourists never find. From the cliff-top village of Zambujeira do Mar down to Cape Sardao dramatic lighthouse, this is the wildest walk in southern Portugal — and it barely registers on most Algarve itineraries.
Why This Works Now (Late March)
- March conditions bring green cliffs from winter rains, golden March sun, and dramatic Atlantic swells
- Shoulder season means empty trails — you might see fewer than a dozen people all day
- Faro airport access makes this a doable day trip (or overnight in Zambujeira)
- Photography gold — dramatic cliffs, lighthouse, sea stacks, and empty beaches
- No crowds — this is what the Algarve coast looked like before tourism
The Walk
Overview
- Distance: 12km one-way (or 24km round trip)
- Duration: 4-6 hours one-way, full day for round trip
- Difficulty: Moderate — some steep ascents/descents, rocky terrain
- Best direction: Zambujeira do Mar → Cape Sardao (mostly downhill with spectacular views)
- Return: Taxi back or arrange pickup (limited mobile signal, plan ahead)
What You will See
- Zambujeira do Mar village — cliff-top village with centuries of fishing history
- Praia de Zambujeira do Mar — dramatic beach accessed via steep path
- Coastal cliffs — 100+ meter drops to churning Atlantic
- Sea stacks and caves — geological drama around every bend
- Cape Sardao lighthouse — Portugal southwestern point, dramatic setting
- Portuguese manchineel trees — rare coastal vegetation
Terrain Notes
Mostly grassy cliff-top paths with some rocky sections. Signposted as part of the Rota Vicentina (though less maintained than northern sections). Some steep staircases down to beaches. Wind can be strong — March gusts common on exposed sections.

By bus: EVO bus from Lagos or Faro to Odemira, then taxi to Zambujeira (limited service).

- Arrange pickup: If doing one-way, arrange for someone to collect you at Cape Sardao
Practical Tips
- Start early — March sunrise is around 7 AM; aim to begin by 8:30 AM for full day
- Bring layers — wind on exposed cliffs stays cold even in March
- Wind check — if forecast shows >30 km/h, consider postponing; cliff paths become hazardous
- Water — carry at least 2L per person; no sources along route
- Food — cafe in Zambujeira village for pre-walk, bring snacks for trail
- Footwear — sturdy hiking boots or shoes with grip; paths can be slippery after rain
- Sun protection — March sun is stronger than expected; sunscreen essential
- Mobile signal — limited; download offline maps and tell someone your plans
Local Safety Note
- No lifeguards at beaches along this stretch — do not swim unless in July-August and even then be extremely cautious
- Cliff edges — stay back from edges; loose rock, especially after rain
- Weather changes fast — March can bring sudden fog or rain; pack rain shell
- Emergency: 112 (EU emergency) — know your approximate location
- Tell someone your plans before you go
