Praia do Furnas
Praia do Furnas is the one that makes you exhale. Its not the most famous beach on this list, its not the best for surfing, and it wont win any awards for facilities because it doesnt have any. What it has is space — endless, wind-swept, Atlantic space — and the kind of emptiness that becomes precious once youve spent time at crowded beaches.
The landscape here is raw. Low cliffs, vast stretches of sand, and that particular shade of blue-grey the Atlantic gets when the sky is wide and the water is deep. In winter, storms roll in off the ocean and the beach becomes a demonstration of natures power. In summer, its warm and golden and wild, but the wind keeps most people away. Thats when its best — having a near-empty Furnas all to yourself in July is a kind of luxury that cant be bought.
Getting There
From Sagres, head west toward the coast. Furnas is located on the western side of the Sagres peninsula. The roads are decent but the signage can be sparse — have a general idea of where youre going or use coordinates. Theres a parking area at the end of the road, then a short walk to the beach.
When to Go
Any time, honestly, though the experience differs dramatically. Summer gives you the best chance of warm, calm days for beach lounging, but bring wind protection — this coast is notoriously breezy. Winter is for storm watchers and photographers who want drama. Autumn and spring offer a balance smaller crowds, and that sense of wildness that makes the coast special.
