Torre de Tavira — Câmara Obscura

The Torre de Tavira is an old water tower at the top of the town that now works as a camera obscura — a darkened chamber where a lens and mirror in the roof project a live, moving image of Tavira onto a viewing table below. Guides steer the view around the town in real time: rooftops, the river, the castle and the churches Tavira is known for, all sliding across the table as the optics turn. It is one of the odder viewing experiences in the Algarve, and one of the more memorable.

As a subject, the tower itself is a plain white cylinder near the castle — the real material is the experience and the position. The site sits at the highest part of the old town, in the same cluster of lanes as the castle and Santa Maria, so it slots naturally into a morning of rooftop and old-town shooting.

When to go: a bright, clear day — the projection lives on daylight, and strong sun gives the table image its contrast. Pair it with the castle walls next door for the direct, camera-in-hand version of the same panorama.
