A few kilometres inland from Tavira, Hotel Rural Quinta do Marco sits in the kind of countryside the eastern Algarve does best — carob and citrus, labelled herb gardens, walking trails threading off into the hills, and sunrises that guests set alarms for. This is a working piece of rural Portugal turned into a comfortable, well-run country hotel, and it wears both identities gracefully.
Rooms are spacious, comfortable and kept immaculately clean, with idyllic views over the surrounding country. The gardens are a genuine feature rather than a backdrop: filled with lovely labelled plants and herbs, they invite slow wandering, and the resident animals — beautiful and clearly well cared for — give the quinta its easy, lived-in charm. The pool is the natural centre of a summer afternoon, and the kitchen earns consistent praise for honest, generous cooking.
What guests remember most is how the place is run. The staff and management have a reputation for going far beyond the job — groups celebrate here, families settle in for a week, and the welcome scales to both. It’s worth knowing that this is a family-friendly hotel in the fullest sense: lively with children in high season, which is either the point or the caveat depending on the holiday you’re after.
As a base it’s quietly brilliant: Tavira‘s riverfront and tiled townhouses are minutes away, the Ria Formosa’s island beaches a short drive further, and yet evenings return you to cricket-song and country dark. For travellers who want the eastern Algarve’s beaches by day and genuine rural peace by night, the quinta hits a rare balance.

in the last weekHotel Quinta do Marco is a very beautiful and peaceful place. I would like to highlight, first of all, the friendliness of the employee who warmly welcomed us. Thank you very much for your attention and the welcoming way you received us! At breakfast, I particularly enjoyed the orange juice, the fresh bread and the delicious shortbread. I deeply regret two situations that I consider revealing of some lack of professionalism on the part of some employees. On the first day, we had dinner at the hotel restaurant, by reservation. A very friendly employee, but who, unfortunately, did not speak or understand Portuguese very well, took our order, which consisted of nine people. In the end, more dishes arrived than we expected. When we tried to explain what had happened, an employee who was working in the kitchen came to our table, visibly annoyed, to tell us that one dish was still missing, apparently because he interpreted our explanation as a complaint about the delay. Shortly afterwards, we heard applause coming from the kitchen and someone saying, loudly: "Good! Congratulations!". We considered the situation completely unacceptable and, naturally, felt very uncomfortable. We were simply trying to clarify a mistake in the order. The day before check-out, and considering the incident that occurred in the restaurant, we decided to place an order through Glovo, mainly because the children were extremely tired. We had used this service in other hotels before, without ever having any problems. However, at this hotel, the situation was completely different. As soon as the delivery person arrived at reception, which was our meeting point, the employee there approached him in a clearly unpleasant manner, asking him what he was doing there and informing him that it was not allowed to bring food from outside, since the hotel had a restaurant. When we approached to collect our order, the employee continued to address us rudely, repeating that the hotel did not allow purchases through Glovo or its consumption in the room, citing the problem of ants, emphasizing that the information was in the guests' rooms. She also mentioned that they did not want the presence of "strangers" on the premises. This approach left us extremely embarrassed, especially because of the way the situation was presented, leading us to believe that we were committing a serious infraction. I would like to point out that the hotel keeps the gate open and has cameras on the outside, so we do not understand the concern expressed regarding a delivery person entering to make a delivery at reception. Moreover, one question remains: have the guests of this hotel never needed to call a taxi? The drivers also enter the premises to pick up or drop off guests. The result of this approach was that I, my husband, my children, and my parents, both almost 70 years old, decided to eat in the car to avoid further friction. Later, we consulted the information provided in the room and found that there was no indication prohibiting orders through Glovo. Regarding eating in the room, they only advised against leaving food exposed because of ants. We travel a lot throughout the year and stay in many hotels, but we had never been treated this way. It's a shame, because the place is really beautiful and peaceful, and initially we had an excellent impression. Unfortunately, some attitudes and behaviors ended up negatively impacting our stay. It was a sad experience, and we will not be repeating our stay.
