Cork is the Algarve’s other harvest, and the hills above São Brás de Alportel are its heartland. Fonte Férrea — a shaded spring and picnic ground on the road climbing north into the serra — is the easy way into that landscape: trails leading off among cork oaks whose trunks, freshly stripped in the summer harvest, glow a deep rust-red against the grey-green canopy. Nothing on the coast prepares you for the colour; a hillside of newly harvested sobreiros looks almost painted.
The site itself is a pleasant, unhurried spot — old trees, water, shade, the small-scale terracing of the serra — but the photographs live on the trails: bare red trunks under cork-grey limbs, the white-painted harvest digits on the bark, low sun coming through the canopy. It’s an intimate landscape, closer to woodland portraiture than vista hunting.
When to go: late summer, just after the harvest, is when the stripped trunks burn brightest — the red mellows to brown over the following months, and by spring the same walk reads as ordinary green woodland with cistus flowering underneath. The canopy filters harsh light, so the woods stay workable longer into the day than open country.
Who it’s for: photographers after something genuinely Algarvian that isn’t a cliff. Walkers and picnickers wanting easy shade in the hills. Anyone driving the N2 north — the cork story is the serra’s story, and this is where to see it fresh. Not for those who need drama handed over: the reward here is quiet observation.
