The Algarve doesn’t do waterfalls — except for a few weeks a year, when winter rain gets into the Serra de Monchique and the Barbelote falls wake up. Tucked into a green fold of the high serra on the flanks of Fóia, this is a thread of white water dropping through moss, ferns and old trees: a scene from northern Portugal hiding above the beach Algarve.

Honesty first: this is a strictly seasonal spot. In summer, and after dry winters, there may be nothing here but damp rock. The time to come is during and just after the wet months, when the springs of the serra are running — that’s when the moss glows and the fall actually falls.

When to go: late winter into early spring for water, on a still day after rain. Overcast light is a gift here — the ravine is contrasty in full sun, and soft light with a slow shutter is the classic treatment.

Getting there is the advanced part — forestry tracks and rough paths in the high serra, with thin signage. Go with a mapped route, proper footwear and time to spare; wet ground and slick rock come with the territory.

Who it’s for: waterfall chasers, long-exposure shooters and hikers who want a target for a serra walk. Not a casual detour — check that it’s flowing before you commit the boots.
