Praia do Martinhal is the calmer face of Sagres: a south-facing bay where the water can sit clear and shallow while the west-coast beaches nearby take the heavier Atlantic mood. The sand is broad and pale, the central dune line gives the beach its shape from behind, and the view opens across the bay toward the Sagres fortress and the two offshore islands.
This is not the most dramatic cliff-and-cave beach in the area, and that is part of its use. Martinhal works as a comfortable beach day rather than a spectacle: children can paddle in knee-deep water, SUP boards have room along the shoreline, and windsurfers use it as a regular flat-water spot. When the weather shifts, it can also produce cross-off wind and waves, but that is less typical than the protected bay feel.
When to go: sunrise has a clean line here, with the sun coming up beside the cliff in the Sagres view. Morning is the safer call for calmer beach time; afternoon wind is a known part of the place, especially around Sagres. The water is often clear, though seagrass can collect in the bay, so swimmers should expect conditions to vary rather than a polished resort-pool look.
Arriving is straightforward by car from the N268, with signs leading down to the beach. Parking is listed at the beach, and there are restaurant and WC facilities, with lifeguard cover noted for the summer season. Shade matters on the open sand: bring your own if you do not want to depend on the concession area.
Who it’s for: families who want shallow water, windsurfers, SUP paddlers, sunrise photographers, and anyone pairing Martinhal with the Sagres coast without needing the biggest scenery of the day. Praia da Mareta and Praia do Tonel sit nearby for a different mood; Martinhal is the easier, breezier counterpoint.
