Garrão is the stretch of the golden triangle’s coastline where the resort landscaping stops and the dunes take over — a long run of sand between Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago, signed at its two entrances as Garrão Poente and Garrão Nascente. Low rust-coloured sandstone bluffs back parts of the beach, eroded into ribs and hollows that photograph far better than their modest height suggests, and umbrella pines lean over the dune line behind.

The atmosphere is quietly monied — beach clubs and restaurants at the entrances, walkers with dogs in winter — but the sand itself is wide, public and easy to escape along. Head in either direction and the towel density collapses within minutes; the western walk toward the Ancão peninsula and the Ria Formosa’s fringe is the better one.

When to go: end of day. The low bluffs catch warm side light as the sun drops, and winter storms regularly re-carve their bases into fresh shapes — this is a beach that looks different every year, and honesty requires saying the erosion is real and ongoing: don’t sit under the overhangs.

Who it’s for: golden-triangle guests who want an actual beach walk rather than a sun-lounger; photographers who like texture — carved sandstone, dune grass, long empty foregrounds; off-season walkers, who may get the best version of it.
