Praia da Marinha

Praia da Marinha has spent years on every world’s-best-beaches list, and for once the committee got it right. The cliff path west of the parking gives you the view the Algarve is sold on: the double sea arch — the famous M — standing in water that runs from glass-green over sand to deep blue past the rock, with ochre cliffs stacked behind. It’s a genuinely great photograph waiting for anyone who walks ten minutes, which is precisely why you will rarely have it alone.

The classic frame is from the clifftop, not the beach — the arches only read as an M from above. Down the stairs, the beach offers a different set: sculpted stone, clear shallows, and rock detail that works at close range. The cliff path continues toward Benagil as part of the Seven Hanging Valleys route, and almost every stretch of it earns a stop.

When to go: morning, on both counts — the light favours the cliffs early, and the parking and path fill relentlessly from mid-morning in season. Shoulder seasons give you the same water colours with breathing room. Winter storms make the clifftop dramatic, but keep well back from the edge.

Practical texture: signed from the EN125, free clifftop parking, stairs down to the sand. The famous view involves standing near unfenced edges that occasionally shed rock — treat the barriers and warning signs as load-bearing.

Who it’s for: everyone, once — this is the region’s signature frame. Photographers should come early, work the cliff path, and treat the beach as the bonus rather than the subject.
