Fresh, Local Flavours by the Ria Formosa in Olhão

Restaurante Sabores da Ria d’Olhão sits right on Praça Patrão Joaquim Lopes, an easy stop when you’re exploring the waterfront and the markets in Olhão. True to its name, this welcoming restaurant leans into the coastal character of the Algarve—think relaxed meals, Portuguese hospitality, and the kind of setting that suits everything from a quick lunch break to an unhurried dinner after a day out on the lagoon.

On the menu, you can expect a strong connection to the sea and the region. It’s a great place to seek out well-loved Portuguese staples—especially if you’re in the mood for fresh seafood and simple, satisfying plates that let the ingredients speak. If you’re visiting the area for the first time, the location makes it an ideal “anchor” restaurant: close enough for a spontaneous walk-in, yet comfortable enough to settle in with friends or family.

What locals and travelers often look for in Olhão is an authentic meal without fuss, and Sabores da Ria d’Olhão fits that easygoing rhythm. The atmosphere is casual and approachable, with a focus on good food and good conversation rather than fine-dining formality. Pair your meal with a classic Portuguese drink, take your time, and enjoy the natural flow of the square—especially in the evening when the waterfront energy feels at its best.

If you’re planning a visit, keep the address handy—Praça Patrão Joaquim Lopes 10, 8700-353 Olhão—so it’s simple to find. I have lived here for nearly 4 years and spent over 20 years coming on Holiday .Luckily I have never been to this restaurant before and will never go there again. The service was average /slow .The food was average compared to anywhere else I have eaten. We obviously were not tourists as were speaking Portuguese but it just felt like we being treated differently to the Portuguese .We ordered clams to start and they didnt arrive. There was not enough bread given for everyone .There was no side salad with the main course.Didnt stop for anything else.Would usually have desert and coffee but decided to spend that money elsewhere
