Silves to Monchique Walk: The Historic Trail Connecting Moorish Past to Thermal Springs
Two inland gems. One historic trail threading between them.
Most visitors to the Algarve never leave the coast. They miss the silent hills behind Silves, where the scent of eucalyptus gives way to something older — the echo of Moorish footsteps on a path that once linked castle to convent.
This is a walk for the curious, not the casual. You are not chasing a beach here. You are chasing 800 years of history.
Why March Specifically
- Ideal temperatures — 14–18°C daytime, cool enough for a sustained uphill climb
- Clear visibility — March air is crisp post-winter, offering panoramic views from the Foia approach
- Spring flowers — Wild orchids and gladioli appear along the trail in early spring
- Pre-Easter window — Enough daylight (11+ hours), minimal booking pressure on Monchique stays
The Route
- Distance: 16km one-way (Silves → Monchique)
- Elevation gain: ~600m
- Duration: 5–7 hours walking pace
- Difficulty: Moderate — some rocky sections, one sustained climb after the microwave tower
Getting There / Back
- Start: Silves castle area (parking at Convento de São José or town centre)
- End: Monchique town square (bus back to Silves: weekdays only, check Eva Transdev app)
- Alternative: Split into two days with overnight in Monchique
Key Landmarks Along the Way
- Ribeira de Silves — Cross the riverbed (often dry March–May)
- Microwave tower junction — Clear navigation point, good lunch spot
- Portela viewpoint — First major vista toward Monchique
- Monchique old town — Cork oak forests close in
What to Bring
- Walking boots: Rocky, uneven terrain
- Water: 1.5L minimum, no fountains along route
- Layers: Summit can be 5°C cooler than Silves
- Snacks: No shops between Silves and Monchique
Local Tip
The Silves to Monchique trail is waymarked with yellow arrows, but GPS is recommended. Download the trail on AllTrails or Komoot before departure. March can bring morning fog that obscures waymarks in the forest sections.
