A Quiet, Eco-Friendly Ria Formosa Boat Trip with Incredible Birdlife

If you want to experience the lagoon side of the Algarve in a calm, nature-first way, Lands – Eco Boat Tours (Departures) is a smart pick. Departing from Cais das Portas do Mar in Faro, this boat tour agency focuses on the Ria Formosa’s salt marshes and mudflats—an area packed with wildlife and ever-changing scenery. The trips are especially popular on bright, sunny days when the water is glassy and the views open up across the marshes and the city skyline.

What guests love most is the combination of a comfortable ride and a guide who makes the ecosystem come alive. Guides are described as friendly, engaging, and impressively knowledgeable—sharing bird names, fun stories, and context about how the mudflats support different life systems. Even if you’re not a serious bird watcher, it’s easy to get drawn in when you’re spotting wading birds across the salt marshes and learning what makes this protected landscape so special. Some trips even include those “wow” sightings people hope for, like flamingos cruising through the shallows.

A major differentiator is the boat itself. The solar-electric boat tour format keeps things quiet and smooth, which not only feels more relaxing but also makes it easier to hear the guide and notice the subtle sounds of nature. It’s a great option for families, couples, and anyone who wants a short, informative outing without the noise and fumes that can come with traditional boats.

Along the way you’ll also get a fresh perspective of Faro from the water—ideal for photos and for understanding how closely the city and the lagoon are connected. Whether the day is warm and sunny or a bit breezy, the team is known for keeping spirits high and the experience rewarding. For a low-impact adventure with high-value scenery and learning, Lands – Eco Boat Tours (Departures) belongs on your Algarve itinerary.

The boat trip was everything that we expected and a very nice experience on a beautiful sunny day! Andre our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable and kept an interesting conversation going for 2 hours! We enjoyed the company of the other travellers too. We are not expert bird watchers but enjoyed seeing at least a dozen different wading birds on the salt marshes including spoonbills and whimbrels and ospreys and sandwich terns overhead. Overall it was a great experience.

We had a wonderful experience on this tour. We had a late start getting to the marina but our guide and other guests were very accommodating. Our guide was spectacular. She knew countless bird names in multiple languages and had funny stories to share the entire way. Best of all we saw flamingos! The solar boat was comfortable and quiet and there were birds everywhere. Don’t hesitate to add this to your itinerary.

We had a great time on the boat with our guide. The weather was very chilly and windy but we still enjoyed learning about the Ria Formosa. We saw a lot of different birds and learned about the different ecosystem of the mudflats and what life systems it supports. We also had great views of Faro and the City from the water. Our guide was very informative and a good sport with the weather. It was a great opportunity to get the family out on the water and get a different perspective. I also loved that the boat was solar-electric. It was quiet, smooth, and good for the environment! I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone wanting a short but informative trip on the water.

Splendid bird watching boat trip with Lands Eco Boat Tours in Faro today. In a few hours we got close to a big variety of small and big birds who live in the lagoon. Everything ran smoothly, we were a good group of 6 in the boat with a very kind and knowledgeable guide who helped pointing out birds and crabs. As the boat is quiet, we even got to hear a Kingfisher that flew over us, not see as it was too quick for anyone but the guide to catch :) Thank you for a good experience that will last a lifetime. Loved it! Our guide was great, she was really knowledgeable and genuinely excited about the birds we got to see. Going slowly up the small channels in an electric boat made all the difference. Highly recommended
