Running right through the heart of Tavira, Gilao River is one of those places that immediately makes you slow down and take it all in. This much-loved tourist attraction sets the scene for classic Algarve moments—sunlight on the water, gentle reflections from the riverside buildings, and a relaxed rhythm that feels perfectly in step with the town. It’s an ideal starting point for exploring, whether you’re arriving for a day trip or settling in for a longer stay.
One of the best ways to experience the river is simply to follow the riverbank on foot. You’ll pass plenty of restaurants lining the waterfront, many positioned to catch a beautiful view toward the bridge. It’s the kind of place where a casual coffee turns into a long lunch, especially when you can watch boats glide by and see locals enjoying the promenade. The views are particularly striking around the small bridges that cross the water—simple, charming crossings that frame the town and make for great photos.
Timing your visit can add an extra layer of fun. At low tide, keep an eye on the riverbank—you may spot small crabs moving about near the water’s edge. It’s a simple detail, but it adds to the feeling that this is a living, changing landscape rather than just a viewpoint. Come in the morning for softer light and a quieter walk, or later in the day when the waterfront feels lively and the restaurants begin to fill.
If you want an easy, authentic way to feel connected to Tavira, the Gilão River delivers. It’s scenic without being overdone, central without being hectic, and it gives you a front-row seat to what makes this town one of the Algarve’s most memorable stops.

3 years agoThe river seems to be one of the main attractions of Tavira. It is pretty to look at and there are tons of restaurants at the riverbank. Many of them with a nice view of the bridge. At low tide you should look out for the crabs roaming the riverbank.

3 years agoAmazing view. Tavira is a lovely town with Rio Gilao in the middle and several small bridges crossing it. Really one of the most beautiful towns in Algarve.
