Where the Alentejo Meets the Atlantic: The Wild Cliff Walk From Cercal do Alentejo to Cape Sardão
Just north of the Algarve border, Cercal do Alentejo leads to one of Europe’s most dramatic promontories—Cape Sardão. This 12km coastal loop offers towering cliffs, migrating birds, and a historic lighthouse, all free. March brings wildflowers to the inland sections and dramatic Atlantic storms.
Why March Is the Best Time
- Migratory birds — raptors and seabirds pass through in March; good chance of seeing peregrine falcons and Audouin’s gulls
- Wildflower carpets — the inland sections between Cercal and the coast bloom with purple and yellow spring flowers
- Dramatic weather — March storms create spectacular wave action at the cliffs; bring raincoat for the full experience
- No crowds — you might see 5-10 people max on a March weekday
Practical Guide
Getting There
- Nearest transport: Train to Funcheira or bus from Santiago do Cacém; from there, a 6km walk or €10 taxi to Cercal
- Parking: Free parking in Cercal do Alentejo village square
- GPS Trailhead: 37.8267° N, 8.6822° W (Cercal village)
The Walk
- Distance: 12 km loop (or 8 km out-and-back to lighthouse)
- Difficulty: Moderate to challenging (some steep cliff sections)
- Time: 3-4 hours
- Surface: Mixed: paved road, dirt tracks, rocky cliff paths
What You’ll See
- Cape Sardão lighthouse (built 1890, still operational)
- 100m+ cliffs with uninterrupted Atlantic views
- Coastal heathland with endemic Algarve/Spanish lavender
- Possible dolphin sightings (watch for dorsal fins from cliff viewpoint)
Local Tip
⚠️ Check wind conditions — March can have strong Atlantic gusts (30-50 km/h). If the wind is above 40 km/h, skip the exposed cliff sections near the lighthouse. Safer to do the inland loop instead. Check IPMA wind forecast or windguru.cz for “Cape St. Vincent” area.
What to Avoid
- Summer heat — no shade on the cliff; 35°C+ in July-August makes this dangerous
- Going off-path — cliff edges are unstable; stick to marked trails
- Swimming here — no beach access; dangerous currents
Nearby Free Add-Ons
