Hidden in the rolling countryside above Loulé, the Viceroy at Ombria Algarve is what happens when a five-star resort trades the beachfront bustle for hilltop serenity. Opened in 2024 and still gleaming, it spreads across a valley of cork oaks and olive trees, with views that guests describe as genuinely breathtaking — especially from the valley-facing rooms, which are worth every extra euro.

The rooms themselves are large, beautifully appointed and generously separated across the grounds, so even at busy times the resort keeps a feeling of near-private calm — more than one guest has sworn they had the whole hillside to themselves. Beds are deeply comfortable, bathrooms are polished, and the architecture folds into the landscape rather than fighting it.

Days here fill themselves. The spa with its thermal pool is a destination in its own right, the golf course is a fun, fair layout that rewards a relaxed round rather than punishing every stray drive, and the wine tastings — ask for João — get glowing reviews from guests who came for one glass and stayed for the education. The restaurants and bars across the property serve fresh, flavourful cooking that holds its own against the setting, which is saying something.

This is inland Algarve at its most refined: fifteen minutes from Loulé’s market town charm, half an hour from the beaches, and a world away from both. For couples, golfers and anyone whose ideal holiday involves valley views, thermal water and long dinners under quiet skies, Ombria makes a persuasive case that the Algarve’s best luxury now lives in the hills.

The staff is incredibly friendly, attentive, and professional. The hotel itself is beautiful, charming, and set in a stunning location. The food at the restaurant is very good, although it is often difficult to get a dinner reservation due to limited availability. That said, there are some areas that need significant improvement. Room service feels poor and lacks attention to detail. The dishes delivered do not always match the presentation or quality of those served in the restaurant, and they only bring basic cutlery, without even providing a tray with condiments, salt, or pepper. Housekeeping also falls below the standard expected from a luxury property. Toiletries and cream dispensers are not checked or refilled consistently, amenities are not replenished, and a dirty bathrobe was removed but never replaced. In addition, the rooms and bathrooms would benefit from a more thorough and detailed cleaning. Overall, a wonderful property with excellent staff, but the housekeeping and room service standards need improvement to match the quality of the hotel itself.

We had a wonderful stay at the Viceroy at Ombria Algarve and loved this hotel. The setting is absolutely stunning: the hotel is very peaceful, nestled in the mountains, with superb architecture and breathtaking views. It's truly a place to relax, disconnect, and enjoy a few days of tranquility. The pools are fantastic, including one that's heated. Even in the height of summer, we never felt crowded: there were always sun loungers available, without having to fight for them, and plenty of complimentary towels. The service is probably one of the hotel's biggest strengths. The staff is extremely attentive, always available without being intrusive. There's always someone checking in to make sure everything is alright, and sometimes a simple glance is enough for them to understand what you need. We truly felt pampered throughout our stay. The pool bar is also excellent. The service is quick and it's a great place to have lunch. The snacks are high quality: salads, pizzas, children's menu… everything is delicious, well-presented, and quite refined. We also really enjoyed the main restaurant. The food there is excellent. Special mention goes to the shrimp pasta, which I found exceptionally good: I could come back to this hotel just to order it again! The breakfast buffet is also remarkable. It's very comprehensive yet refined. The fresh fruit is excellent, cut every morning, with a selection that changes regularly. There are very good French pastries, Nutella, excellent pastéis de nata, and especially a corner where omelets are made to order and are truly delicious. The breakfast room is particularly pleasant: the tables are spaced far enough apart that you never feel crowded, with a choice of a sunny area, a shaded area, or a very quiet indoor room. Our room was large, very spacious, and pleasant, with particularly comfortable bedding. The only slight drawback of our stay was the room cleaning, which was sometimes done quite late in the day. However, this is a minor detail and didn't spoil our stay at all. Regarding the location, it's worth noting that the hotel is rather out of the way. It takes about thirty minutes by car to reach more lively places like Faro or Tavira, and the nearest town doesn't have much to offer tourists. But this isn't really a drawback: you mainly choose this hotel to enjoy the resort, its tranquility, and its surroundings. In short, a wonderful discovery. A magnificent, relaxing hotel with superb facilities, excellent food, and above all, exceptional service. We had a very pleasant stay and highly recommend it for a few days of relaxation in the Algarve.
