Mareta is Sagres’ everyday beach — the south-facing sweep below the village, held between the fortress promontory on one side and the headland toward the harbour on the other. On a coast defined by wind and heavy Atlantic water, that southern exposure is the whole point: when the west-facing beaches are getting flattened by the northwesterly, Mareta is often the calm, workable option, which is why the surf schools and the undecided both end up here.

It looks the part of the Algarve’s last corner. The cliffs behind the sand are layered and stark rather than postcard-ochre, the fortress plateau looms to the west, and the light out here has that end-of-the-world clarity Sagres trades on. Walk in from the village — it’s genuinely close — and the beach reads as part of the town rather than an excursion from it.

When to go: it earns its keep on big-swell and windy days, when it’s the sheltered fallback; for photographs, first and last light, with the fortress headland anchoring the frame. Summer afternoons bring the town down to the sand, but Sagres-busy is still a relaxed number.

Who it’s for: beginner and improver surfers on the schools’ schedule; Sagres-based travellers who want a swimmable beach on foot; photographers working the fortress headland into a foreground-led coastal frame rather than shooting it from the tourist viewpoint.
