Inland river beaches are a Portuguese institution the coastal Algarve mostly does without — which makes Pego Fundo a small event. On the edge of Alcoutim, where a quiet tributary winds down toward the Guadiana, the stream widens into a proper praia fluvial: a sanded bank, calm water the colour of olive glass, and hills for a horizon instead of cliffs. In summer it works as the village lido; out of season it’s simply a still, pretty pocket of the Guadiana valley with herons for company.

Photographically it’s about stillness. Morning water like poured metal, reflections of the far bank, swimmers and paddlers as small figures in a green frame. Nothing here shouts — the pictures are quiet ones, and better for it.

When to go: summer, when the beach is doing its job — bathers, umbrellas, the full river-lido scene. For emptier, moodier frames, spring mornings give green hills and glassy water. This is deep-inland Algarve: summer afternoons are seriously hot, so keep the middle of the day for the water rather than the camera.

The beach sits effectively in the village — a short walk from Alcoutim’s riverside — which means the castle, the cafés and the Sanlúcar panorama are all part of the same visit.

Who it’s for: families overnighting in Alcoutim — calm, gently shelving bathing without surf. Photographers passing through the river Algarve who want a counterpoint to the border panorama. Wild-swimming types happy with tame wildness. Nobody should cross the region just for this — but woven into a Guadiana day, it earns its stop.
