Two villages, two castles, two countries, one river between them. Alcoutim sits on the Portuguese bank of the Guadiana; Sanlúcar de Guadiana faces it from the Spanish side, close enough that the church bells answer each other across the water. Both are white, stacked on hillsides and crowned by a fortress — a matched pair from the centuries when this quiet river was a contested frontier. From either castle the panorama takes in the other village, the green river and hills rolling away with barely a building on them.

The classic frame is from the Alcoutim side: whitewashed houses stepping down to the water, yachts moored mid-river, and Sanlúcar rising opposite with its hilltop castle — an entire foreign country as your backdrop. The riverside gardens and jetty give the low vantage; the castle above the village gives the elevated one. A small boat shuttles between the two banks, and a zip line crosses the river from Spain to Portugal, occasionally sending a moving subject through your frame.

When to go: afternoon into evening, when the westering sun lights the Spanish bank face-on and Sanlúcar’s white houses glow against the hills. Spring turns the surrounding country green and flowered. Summer inland heat is serious — this is one of the hottest corners of the Algarve, so work the early and late hours.

Who it’s for: photographers and slow travellers who want an Algarve with zero beach infrastructure — this is the river Algarve, quiet and unpolished. Border-curiosity collectors: few places let you compose one country from inside another this comfortably. Pair it with the Guadiana bank road south for hamlets and river bends.
